Meet Welsh Triathlon's new Development Manager, Andrew Deans

Meet Andrew Deans our new Development Manager

Welsh Triathlon would like to introduce our new Development Manager, Andrew Deans. We are excited to have Andrew on board and welcome him as the newest member of the Welsh Triathlon team!

Andrew’s background

‘I did my first triathlon in 1996, which was Try a Tri in Cardiff, on a borrowed mountain bike. Even though my legs ached, I thought it was a great event. For the next few years I did a few races each season, just for fun, with a group of friends.

On returning to Cardiff I decided to take triathlon more seriously and joined a local club. After marshalling at the various Club events, I began to get involved in the organisational side of the sport.

I became Chairman of Cardiff Triathletes, a post I held for seven years. Working within the Committee structure of the Club, we were able to develop its finances, coaching team, IT systems, training sessions and governance arrangements.

In 2005, I volunteered to be the Race Director for the Cosmeston Sprint Triathlon and have acted as the Race Director / Safety Officer in over twenty triathlons. I qualified as a level 2 British Triathlon Coach in 2008 and have coached regularly within the Club since. In 2014, I was nominated by Cardiff Triathletes, and become Welsh Triathlon’s Volunteer of the Year.

I still continue to take part in triathlons each season, mainly in Wales, and completed Ironman Wales in 2012.

My education includes a degree in Applied Economics, a Post Graduate Diploma in Export Management and a Post Graduate Certificate in Health Management.

After leaving university I joined the National Health Service as a manager in England and then Wales. I held a number of posts, specialising in primary care, contract and project management.

After twenty years service I decided on a complete career change, and joined Welsh Triathlon, as their Development Manager. I am really looking forward to working with our partners to develop the sport we love.'
