Volunteers Celebrated at British Triathlon Annual Awards

In an evening aimed at celebrating an outstanding summer of success for British Triathlon, the Volunteers, Officials and Coaches central to the sport have been recognised at the Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday 14 November.

The Volunteer Awards, supported by Leigh Day & Co recognised the outstanding contribution made to the sport by our network of dedicated, motivated and passionate volunteers.

Dr Sarah Springman OBE, President of British Triathlon Federation highlighted their contribution commenting: “This year has seen unrivalled achievement for British Triathlon. The Annual Awards Dinner is triathlon’s opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our successes.   Not only the athletes make the headlines, but also the volunteers, who give up their time to support our sport.”

The Leigh Day & Co. British Triathlon Volunteer of the Year award went to Ian Jones of Manchester Triathlon Club. When asked about his reasons for volunteering Ian commented: “In my experience most triathletes do, even if it’s just giving up a couple of hours a week to help coach or help with races - most of us all do this. I might have won this, but I am sure there are hundreds or thousands of people out in the UK who are just as deserving of this, so to my mind it is just as much about them as it is me.”

The Leigh Day & Co. British Triathlon Young Volunteer of the Year award was won by Caitlin Simon, a member of Alnwick District Triathlon Club. Caitlin commented:

“It feels good; it’s nice to be appreciated.”

Triathlon is a central part of family life for the 16 year old who adds: “My mum and dad both do it [volunteer], so it’s in the home and its great fun.”

“It’s fantastic. I have been coaching for a long time now; it’s nice to be rewarded. I have put a lot of work in the last few years to make the club better, and it’s nice that people have voted for me.”

She is currently the Regional Official Coordinator and Technical Advisor for London. Lynda was also recently selected to be one of the Technical Officials at the Dextro Energy Triathlon - ITU World Championship Series event hosted at Hyde Park.

Penny Knight of Leigh Day & Co Solicitors was delighted to attend the evening commenting: “It was great to attend the Awards Dinner and share in the success of British Triathlon this year. This extends to the hard work put in by all the volunteers, coaches and officials - those people who often go unnoticed but whose hard work and dedication play such a crucial role in enabling the sport to develop and succeed.”

Following the awards presentations, guests were entertained by after dinner speaker and now fellow triathlete, rowing double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell, OBE.
