2010 Athlone ETU Triathlon European Championships in Ireland

Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th July 2010

Athlone is a vibrant friendly town located in County Westmeath - The thriving heart of the Magical Irish Midlands.

Ireland’s longest river, The River Shannon, flows right through the centre of the town which gives Athlone a unique dimension.  There are many ways to enjoy the river; cruising, fishing, sailing, diving and many more water based activities.  However, if you would prefer to stay dry you can enjoy the river view from many of Athlone’s fine pubs and restaurants.

The town itself is extremely proud to be hosting such a prestigious event and a very warm welcome is guaranteed to all members of the GB Age Group Triathlon Team.

The Event

The swim starts on the Connaught side of the River Shannon and the spectacular Inland & Coastal Marina Systems Pontoon will form the focal point of the swim entry. The bike course will be held on fully closed roads.  The course sets off from the Transition area inside the army barracks on Grace Road, and continues out to the Galway Road.  Olympic distance athletes will turn at 20km and come back in on the same route, while the sprint distance athletes will turn at the 10km point on the same course.

The most exciting part of the race is the run route.  The narrow town centre streets of Old Athlone’s ‘West-Bank’ will create an electric atmosphere.  Athletes will exit the army barracks onto Grace Road where they will complete two laps (Sprint) and four laps (Olympic) of the course.  Athletes run past Athlone’s historical Castle, down and back up Grace Road along the banks of the River Shannon, before crossing into Leinster and onto Church Street where the finish, recuperation and baggage drop area is at the Civic Centre Plaza in the shadow of the stunning new Athlone Town Centre.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Athlone is in extremely high demand, the annual Tri-Athlone event takes place on the same weekend and in previous years the hotels have been block booked months in advance.  The official GB team hotel is the 4 star Radisson Hotel – the nearest hotel to the event site!  The hotel literally backs onto the swim start and is a five minute walk to the transition area.

We have also selected an alternative 4 star hotel along with a 2 star budget option, these hotels are approximately 3-4km from the event site – Race day transfers will be provided for everyone staying at these hotels.
