Clumber race is a Classic

The Clumber Classic Duathlon attracted a high class field and some fast racing on Saturday, 6 March. The lure of National titles, National Ranking points as well as European and World qualifier slots attracted some of the biggest names in the sport. Olympic rowing Champion, James Cracknell, OBE was amongst those gunning for a place at the 2010 Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships in September.

Eimear Mullan held off multiple World Age Group Champion, Emma Dews, to take the British title in 2:01.51. She finished with a one and a half minute winning margin after the two fastest runs of the day. She also had the second best cycle leg for a strong all round performance. Emma Dews finished in 2:03.21 and Esther Evans claimed 3rd place with 2:05.18.

Daniel McCarthy took the win in the men’s race in 1:49.37. A fast opening run, followed by a blistering bike leg, which was bettered only by second placed Wayne Smith, set him up for a one minute win over the former National Champion. Smith did, however, take the victory in the highly competitive 35-39 year age group with his final time of 1:50.46. The final podium spot was taken by Lee Piercy in 1:51.54.

Double Olympic Champion rower James Cracknell finished in 14th place overall with 1:55.26 and 6th in his Age Group, which, subject to confirmation, could be enough to ensure a slot for the World Championships. He was one of only nine athletes to record a sub 60 minute bike leg but struggled on the run having not run for two weeks prior to the event.
