Denbigh Junior Triathlon report

Report and results from the third event in the North TriStars Series event

Report written by Roy Healey

Well what an amazing day we had at the inaugural Denbigh Junior Triathlon! We had some 146 athletes registered to race in our SuperMini, SuperSprint, TriStars, T1,T2,T3, and Youth categories.
As always we let our SuperMini athletes take centre stage to start proceeding's and once again we were given a huge treat with the minis going all out to get a result.

At Ruthin Brooke Sherwood-Day (Ruthin Tristars) lead the field home with a storming bike and run but this time is wasn't to be as Josephine Hurst showed the way home with a fantastic time of 9:35 ahead of Brooke who took second in a time of 10:20 followed closely by Lily Roberts (Ruthin Tristars) a mere 1 second behind in third place in a time of 10:21.

The boys race was contested keenly by Oli Owen and Ewan Leonard who fought tooth and nail all the way with Oli taking first spot in a time of 9:32 with Ewan following in a time of 9:44 with Jake Price (Ruthin Tristars) holding off his best friend to take third spot in a time of 10:24.

The TriStart Starts were up next and just like the mini's they were giving it everything to get that top spot! The girls were off first and the first three places went to the RuthinTristar trio of Millie Hannant 9:18, Faye Williams 10:08 and Cerys Evans 10:57.

The boys race was just as eagerly contested with just 4 seconds splitting 1st from 3rd, what a great race it was with Ben Grantham of Chester Tri club taking top spot in a time of 9:06, very closely followed by James Llywelyn Raw in 9:09, and just 1 second further behind was the fast finishing Finlay Thapa of Cerist Tri Club in 9:10, it just couldn't have been closer.

The SuperSprint race which is an open race for 9 to 16 year olds wanting to give triathlon a go for the first time was as always a treat with Ceri Wyn Jones taking top spot for the girls in a time of 15:32 which also proved to be the fastest of the day in the SuperSprint, followed by Emily Ryder Cadence Tristars in a time of 17:28 and Gweno Price (Ruthin Tristars) in 18:24.The boys were lead home by Joel Jones in 15:34, with Dylan Menzies (RuthinTristars) taking second 16:14 ahead of club mate Sean Kell in a time of 16:31.

The Youths race only had 3 entries but all three boys gave it there all with the ever improving Cedol Dafydd winning in a time of 37:58 ahead of Tomos Wynstanley (Ruthin Tristars) and Daniel Crosby (Cadence TriStars).

The T1 girls competition had 18 entries from all over Wales and everyone was challenging for the series points. Like all the races prior to it this was never an easy race to call and in the end Eve Ratcliffe came home first in a time of 19:03 ahead of Freya Thapa (Cerist Tri Club) 19:38, followed in third by Lottie Parker in a time of 20:50.

The boys race was once again won by RuthinTristars Ioan Hedd Oldfield in 16:44 who made up for a slow start in the swim to pass Fin Thompson second in 17:39 of Cadence Tristars on the bike, with Ceiro Evans (Conwy Tristars) 17:46 completing the podium in third spot.

T2 girls were up next and the ever improving Eve Scott of RuthinTristars took top spot in a time of 25:45 after an excellent bike and run kept her in front of Shannon Rae Haird of intrtri in 26:57 who was followed home in third by Orla Davies of Cadence Tristars who posted the fastest swim of the day.

The T2 boys race had a clear winner with Benjamin Bright of Cadence Tristars storming home in a time of 23:12, followed by Gregory Hopkins of Conwy Tristars in 27:01 and Kai Walsh of Cadence Tristars 28:30 making up the top three.

The final race of the day was the T3 athletes and the girls race and once again Kate Pugh of ooTri showed why she was the athlete to beat in a time of 35:38. RuthinTristars Ella Haf Oldfield 37:36 tried to hold on to Kate, but on the day she was just too strong with the ever improving Ffion Bibby of Cadence Tristars 38:28 completing the top 3.

The boys completed the days racing and the usual suspects were in attendance and once again it was going to be hard to call with races throughout the series ebbing and flowing however on this occasion it was Ifan Gruff Oldfield of Ruthin Tristars 31:46 who held off Celtic Tri's Nathaniel Harries 32:20 and Rhys Davies who posted the fastest swim time of the day (4:04) taking third spot in a time of 33:17.

All in all it was a great days racing, a great atmosphere, fantastic support from parents, family and friends alike and we even finished with some great weather.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out to ensure the race ran smoothly, to all the parents, friends and families for all of their brilliant support, for the athletes who took part, and too all of the club coaches at RuthinTristars.

We look forward to seeing you all again next year in sunny Denbigh, enjoy the rest of the season, see you at Gemau Cymru!
