Welsh Triathlon National Championship duathlon comes to Newport

The first Welsh Championship event of the year saw over a hundred competitors take to the line for the Isca Duathlon at Caerleon which was organised by the University of South Wales.

While the weather was distinctly cool with a cold breeze and road conditions were damp, the rain thankfully stayed at bay and the competitors settled into their race on an undulating course around the hilly surroundings of Caerleon.

In the Senior Male category, Gareth Thomas of San Domenico took the gold medal in 1:01:48 with club team mate Gareth Green taking silver a couple of minutes behind. Benjamin Griffiths of Sheffield Hallam Triathlon took the bronze.

Over in the Senior Female category, Fenella Langridge from Team Pro Motion Dynamics in Cardiff, took the gold medal in 1:14:15 in what was a tightly fought race with Bethan Fowler from NEWT who won silver just 5 seconds behind Fanella. Making up the podium positions was Olivia Blok in 1:23:47. Congratulations to all three.

The Male Veteran category saw some competitive racing between our Welsh Triathlon members. First position was earned by Andrew Wright from Celtic Tri (1:07:56) who held off a stern challenge from second placed Mark Pfeiffer (1:08:402). Making up the podium position was Mark Balch of NEWT who finished strongly in a time of 1:11:33.

Celia White put in a great performance to take first position in the Female Veteran category by finishing in a time of 1:16:29 seconds, so many congratulations to her. In a tussle for second and third places, Lou Summers (1:20:46) and Jayne Arnold (1:21:16) form Celtic Tri took the silver and bronze respectively.

In the Male Super Veteran category the ever consistent Simon Osborne from Pencoed Tri won gold in a time of 1:11:11. So many congratulations to him. His counterpart in this category saw Fiona Davies from Rhondda Triathlon take gold in a time of 1:27:06.

Dr Paul Belcher took the award in the Male Vintage category in a time of 1:19:00 while Linda Spillane from NEWT took the Female Vintage category in a time of 1:40:59.

Many congratulations to all our Welsh Triathlon members. We look forward to seeing you at the next Welsh National Championship event, the Llandudno Sea Triathlon on 29th June 2014.
