British Paratriathlon Championships head to Llanelli

Published:

British Triathlon is pleased to announce that Llanelli in South Wales will host the 2015 British Paratriathlon Championships on Saturday 16th May. The event will crown British Champions and decide which athletes have the opportunity to compete at major championship events including the European and world championships.

Paratriathletes in all classifications will compete along the stunning Millennium Coastal Path over the sprint distance (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run).   The multi-lap format is ideal for fast racing and allows spectators to get close to the action.

Jonathon Riall, British Triathlon’s Paratriathlon Head Coach: “The event is really important as it’s the British Championships and it’s our selection event for all of the major championships in 2015.  We are really appreciative of the support being shown to us from Healthy Life Activities and are excited to work together to deliver a top class racing environment.”

Healthy Active Lifestyles Race director, Noelwyn Daniel said: “Healthy Life Activities are extremely proud to be welcoming the British Paratriathlon Championships to Llanelli. We have an excellent course and there will be a warm Welsh welcome to all Paratriathletes and their supporters."

Former Paralympic swimmer, Rhiannon Henry, will relish the opportunity to compete close to her home in Bridgend having joined the British Paratriathlon programme last autumn. She competes in the visually impaired class, PT5, which will feature at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and in which Britain achieved gold and silver medal winning success at the ITU World Championships last August.

With just two championships selection places available, this will be a fiercely competitive British Championship race with world champion, Alison Patrick, and runner up, Melissa Reid, wanting to secure their international places.

Similarly in the women’s PT4 category (minimal physical impairment), Britain has the current top three athletes in the world with Lauren Steadman, Faye McClelland and Clare Cunningham, but only two can be selected for this year’s European and World Championships. The Llanelli event will also feature international medal winners including Phil Hogg and Joe Townsend alongside up and coming athletes who are looking to make their mark at domestic level.

In addition to the Paratriathlon race, the event will host the Junior Gateway race for the British Triathlon Talent Programme.  The race will see Britain’s top junior triathletes compete for selection at upcoming ETU European Championship and Continental races.
