Llanelli opens gateway to success

Britain’s top junior triathlon talent went head-to-head last weekend (Saturday 14 May) at the Sosban Sprint Junior and Youth Triathlon, with Youth and Junior Super Series ranking points on the line.

The event, which took place on the Llanelli coastline also acted as the British Gateway Junior Triathlon Race, a key selection race for junior athletes hoping to make the British team for the Lisbon ETU Triathlon European Championships at the end of May, as well as ETU Triathlon Junior European Cup events during 2016.

Top of the Junior Men’s class was Sam Dickinson. The recent British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) Triathlon Champion clocked 57:27.25 to take the title ahead of Alex Yee and Alex Chantler-Mayne. Yee put in a staggering 14:46.90 5km run leg to help claw him into silver medal position with 57:28:25. Chantler-Mayne finished in 57:39:05.

Kate Waugh successfully defended her Junior Women’s title. Waugh took the title in 1:04:43.90, 13 seconds clear of Lizzie Hood in 1:04.56.00. Olivia Mathias claimed the final podium spot in 1:05:37.55.

The Youth race was more clear cut, with James Chantler-Mayne taking top honours in 33:59.70. Second was Nathan Smith in 34:31.50, with Matthew Willis completing the podium in 34:45.00

Local athlete, Abbie Williams, performed well on home soil to win the Youth Girl’s race in 37:54.25. Imogen Moroney dipped in 38:18.00, with Libby-Mae Coleman finishing in 38:39.00 to take silver and bronze respectively.
