Welsh Athlete success at Elite Duathlon Championships

Published:

Congratulations to Issy Morris and Tomos Nesham British Champions!

Welsh Triathlon has a good day in a wet, cold and very windy office at the GB Elite National Championships, at Rockingham Motor Circuit near Corby. The day started well with Issy Morris, from Chrickhowell taking command of the Youth Girls race, with a composed first run with a front group of 4 athletes, she rode strongly staying with the groups and after a speedy second transition stormed away from the rest of the field to take the win and her first British National Title. Tomos Nesham from Pontypridd in his first ever duathlon used similar tactics to Issy, by cruising the first run to whittle down the initial group of 4 to 2 by  the second transition to then take the lead at the start of the run , which he held to also take his first British National Title. Both Issy and Tomos didn’t stop smiling for the rest of day.

For the Junior men’s race the weather worsen, with strong blustery winds and continued rain. The first run saw a group of 9 athletes come in to transition and off on to the bike in one group. In the early stages of the cycle a gust of wind took down 5 athletes, one being Deri Stewart who was a strong contender for a podium place going in to the race. Non of the athletes involved in the crash were able to continue. Behind this Ieuan Cooke was riding strongly in a small a chase group  to go on to finish 7th.

The weather continues to worsen and the junior and senior women, along with the senior men’s race were changed from a duathlon to a 10km run as the winds were unsafe to cycle in. Were Rhiannon Middleton finished 12 Junior.
