Welsh Triathlon Inter Regional Championship Team Selection Process

Published:

The 2020 Inter Regional Championships (IRC’s) will take place at Mallory Park Leicestershire on the weekend of the 12th & 13th September.

The event has been updated for 2020 with the introduction of a heats and finals format of racing in addition to the team relay.

A full breakdown of the changes is found HERE.

With the confirmation of the changes, we are now able to publish the selection policy and process for the 2020 Welsh IRC team.

The three-stage selection process introduced last year proved a great success as it allowed athletes multiple attempts at delivering their best performance and this will continue for 2020. We will also continue with the points scoring system that is based on the athlete’s performance within the race not just their finishing position to continue to build a process over outcome focus.

To bring the qualification events in line with the IRC’s we will be using two open water aquathlons and one heats and finals style event as part of the selection process.

The IRC selection events are below

  • Llanelli Open Water Aquathlon- 9th May
  • Rhyl Wales Open Water Aquathlon- 27th June
  • Parc Bryn Bach-Tri in Tredegar- 18th July (Enter HERE)

We will use athletes' best point scores from one of the two aquathlon events and add that to their points score form the Parc Bryn Bach event to select the IRC team. Please note this means racing the Parc Bryn Bach event is mandatory for IRC team selection.

IRC’s FAQ

What is the main purpose of the IRC event?

The Inter Regional Championships (IRC’s) provides an opportunity for TriStar athletes to gain both multisport experience and championship triathlon experience to support their developmental journey within the sport. For many, it will be their first experience of going through a selection process in Triathlon which provides a great learning opportunity whether they are selected or not. Ultimately at this age and stage of a young athlete’s development, the focus should be on having fun and competing to the best of their current ability.

Who is eligible to be selected for the IRC team?

Any athlete who is aged between 11 & 14 as of the 31st December 2020 and is a Welsh Triathlon Member is eligible to be selected for the Welsh IRC team.

How many athletes will be selected?

There will be sixteen athletes selected in total. This will be split out as four athletes of each gender per age group. All athletes who are selected will race in BOTH the individual and team relay event.

Will there be a cost associated with team selection?

As with previous years, there will be an athlete contribution of £100 per selected athlete. If you believe this cost will prevent you from taking part in selected please contact Verity Cook at veritycook@welshtriathlon.org

If I am selected do I get a team kit?

Yes! All selected athletes will receive a Welsh IRC kit package supplied by our sponsors HUUB. The kit package will include; a Tri-suit, team hoody, and team t-shirt.
