The next round of the British Triathlon Super Series took place at Mallory Park over the weekend of 24th & 25th June.
Youth, Junior & Senior athletes raced on Saturday afternoon/evening over the super-sprint heats to secure their place in either the A or B finals the following day. The Junior & Senior race would serve as a qualifier for the U23 European Sprint Championships.
There was a strong Welsh and Performance Centre (NTPCW) contingent competing across all categories.
In the Youth and Junior races, several of the Welsh athletes made the A final for the Sunday. Of those, Josie Hurst (7th Youth), Ifan Bowen (10th Youth), Liam Edwards (6th Junior) and Deri McCluskey (8th Junior) all had great races to finish in the top 10 of their respective categories in the A final. Lucy Jones and Finley Bruce (both Youth) all raced well to finish inside the top 30 of the A finals.
In the B finals, Bethany Clifford (Youth), Iwan Froley (Youth), Rowan Townsend (Youth) and Morgan Watts (Junior) all executed good races to finish inside the top 15 of their respective races.
Sunday afternoon saw the athletes racing again, this time teaming up for the mixed team relay (MTR). Wales had two teams in the Pathway race, with ‘Wales 1’ (Deri, Josie, Liam & Lucy) finishing 3rd in the Youth & Junior category. Whilst this race didn’t count towards anything, the British Champs for the Youth & Juniors will be held in Mallory Park again in September at the Grand Final so we hope the Welsh team can replicate their result, if not go one (or two!) better!
In the Senior Female A final, Tilly Anema lead from the off and produced a dominant display to win overall. Tilly will go on to represent Great Britain at the European Super Sprint Championships in Balikesir, Turkey at the start of August. Ellie White wasn’t far behind in 5th place with another impressive race. Jasmine Cooper produced a strong result to finish 19th to see all NTPCW female athletes inside the top 20.
In the Senior Open A final, Ollie Turner was the first of the NTPCW athletes in 10th, taking his race all the way to the line with a big sprint finish. Turner was followed closely by Freddie Webb just 3 seconds behind in 11th. Next up was Dom Coy and Hugo Jinks in 15th and 23rd respectively. Rounding off the NTPCW athletes in the A final were Matthew Shipley, Harry Butterworth and Guy Evans-Haggerty.
The next National race will be in Sunderland at the end of July where athletes will be racing on the same course, over the same weekend as the elite athletes in the World Triathlon Championship Series race.
