Fitzalan High were hosts of the first schools GO TRI of the season. The event was held for pupils in years 7,8 and 9. With boys and girl’s waves run separately. The GO TRI saw 45 participants with 6 boys, 39 girls and a total of 31 taking part in the swim stage. The event was as a result of a partnership between Fitzalan High School, Race Equality First and the BME Sport Cymru project, Welsh Triathlon, Welsh Rowing, Swim Wales, and Welsh Athletics. Working in collaboration, these organisations were able to put on training taster sessions in the 6 weeks leading up to the event. Simon Lu of Race Equality First stated that:
The GoTri event was a showcase of fantastic partnership work with local projects, National governing bodies and schools delivering a very fun and innovative project. The GoTri give students the opportunity to try a number of sports, it provided them with a training program and final race to give them the platform to achieve...
When asked to speak on the event Miss A Bidgood of Fitzalan High mentioned that:
“GO TRI is a fantastic opportunity and was a chance to bring a multi-sport event to the school which some of the kids would never have had the opportunity to participate in. The support from Welsh Triathlon and the other NGBs was outstanding which meant that we were able to put on an event that was fun, and safe for everyone to take part in. Particularly, the efforts and commitment by Stephanie Makuvise who ensured that the event ran with ease and made it an outstanding experience for all involved. The training taster sessions held in the six weeks beforehand gave the kids the confidence to take part in the final race. We would definitely recommend other schools to embrace GO TRI, and we will be looking to put on more events for our pupils in the future”
The success of this event will allow for more GO TRI events and activities to take place at the school, and hopefully encourage other schools to take advantage of the opportunity.
