Welsh Triathlon are looking forward to working with our incredible event organisers across Wales to see the delivery of a full National Championship calendar for the 2023 season. Events will be spread across the whole of Wales, enabling everyone within our wider triathlon community to engage in a National Championship event. There will also hopefully be a Mixed Team Relay - details will be announced shortly.
The National Championship will continue in its traditional format for 2023, with all National Championships being held as stand-alone events. It will simply be winner takes all on the day at each of the events, and with them, the potential to compete for Tim Tri Cymru at the 2024 British Championships. There is no need to pre-register your intention to compete for a National Championship award. All you need to do is enter your event of choice and make sure you’re a Welsh Triathlon Member.
All Welsh Triathlon members will automatically be considered within the Welsh Championship races. However, you must enter the race by the end of the weekend before to be eligible for Welsh Championship podium places. When entering, please make sure that the details you input, match your Welsh Triathlon membership profile i.e. correct full name, correct date of birth, or you will not be included in the Championship results.
The first event of our 2023 Calendar heads north to Harlech, where participants can compete for the Duathlon Championships at the Harlech Sprint Duathlon delivered by Always Aim High Events. Don’t miss out on an early season opportunity to battle it out for national honours under the shadow of the iconic Harlech Castle on Sunday 26th March 2023.
Next will be our Sprint Championship race at Llanelli Sprint Triathlon on Sunday 14th May, where the Health Life Activities’ event will also double up as Stage 1 of our Super Series. To be eligible for selection to represent Tim Tri Cymru at the British Sprint Championship in 2024, you will need to race at this event.
The third Welsh Championship confirmed in the calendar will be Port Talbot Harriers’ standard distance TATA Steelman which will take place at Eglwys Nunydd Reservoir in Port Talbot. Again, this will double up as a leg of our Super Series and will host Stage 2 as well as our Welsh Standard Distance Championship. Welsh triathlon members will also need to compete here to qualify for Tim Tri Cymru for the 2024 British Standard Championship.
Next, we’ll be heading to Fishguard on 11th June for the Challenge Wales Middle Distance event delivered by Activity Wales Events.
Our Aquathlon Championships sees us head to Parc Bryn Bach in Tredegar for Stage 3 of N.E.W.T’s Parc Bryn Bach Aquathon Series which will be held on Saturday 22nd July.
This year, Welsh Triathlon is happy to announce that they will have their first Long Distance Welsh National Championship Race! This race will be IRONMAN Wales at Tenby on Sunday, 3 September 2023.
Our final confirmed championship race of the year is the Cross Duathlon Championship which sees us travel to Afan Forest Park in Port Talbot on Saturday 25th November for Tough Runner’s Escape to Afan.
We are hopeful that we can work with an Event Organiser to bring a Mixed Team Relay to Wales in 2023. If this event goes ahead, affiliated Welsh Triathlon Clubs will be required to enter teams of two males and two females as they compete against one another for the Mixed Relay title, a race run in the same format as that made popular by the Welsh Team winning silver at the Commonwealth Games this year. As soon as a date is confirmed, this will be published.
A full breakdown of 2023 National Championship Races can be found below. In order to qualify for the Tim Tri Cymru 2024 Sprint and Standard Teams, you will need to compete in the 2023 Welsh National Championships. There may be opportunities as the season progresses to enter teams into other 2024 British National Championships, but focus will be primarily on Sprint and Standard Triathlon.
