2021 Welsh Triathlon Super Series

The third installment of the Welsh Triathlon returns in 2021, which will see Wales’ age groupers go head to head across six scintillating events, all offering different challenges as activity returns following a year of absence.

Its back, and it’ll also be back on your screens in 2021 as WTSS returns with six stages visiting the whole of Wales. Showcasing incredible locations and incredible events, the WTSS 2021 will consist of three sprint and three standard events, with the highest four individual scores accumulating to give the total across all age categories from both genders.

The season this year will kick off in Watsons’ Bay as Barry Island hosts the first sprint event on Sunday 23rd May and then moves down along the South Wales coast to Eglwys Nunydd Reservoir, for the TATA Steelman, our first standard event on Sunday 30th May.

The series then heads West to the Pembrokeshire coast, where the Fishguard Sprint Triathlon offers the third stage on Saturday 12th June. A month later, slightly down the coast, we visit Broadhaven for the Pembrokeshire Coastal Triathlon, the fourth stage and second standard distance triathlon of the series.

By this stage, those who have competed in all four would have a good idea of their potential standings with the points tally gained, but there’s always room to improve, so we head North for the final legs of the series, first visiting Llyn Tegid for the Bala Standard Triathlon on Sunday 5th September, before bringing the 2021 season to a close at the Sandman Sprint Triathlon at Newborough Forest, Anglesey on Saturday 18th September.

To enter the stages, you enter directly via the event organisers and all entry links are below. It is on a first come first serve basis, and with the 2020 season disrupted, there will be a number of deferrals sliding to 2021, so be sure to support the event organisers and register early. If events reach capacity, the event organisers will run a reserve list, but this will be managed at their discretion.

Do I need to register for the series?

Nope, the series is open to Welsh Triathlon members, as well as members of the other Home Nations. All you need to do is make sure that you enter the race, and that your memberships are valid three days from race day. This is when the event directors submit the start list to us so we can verify memberships!

How are the Categories calculated?

As 2019, there will be an overall male and female competition, as well as age group categories for both genders. You will get a score for your finishing position within the overall competition (where the top 60 finishing members in male and female gather points), as well as the top 60 within your categories. These will be awarded as follows

1st Place – 100points; 2nd Place – 90points; 3rd Place – 85points; 4th Place 80points; 5th Place – 75points, 6th Place – 70points; 7th Place – 65points; 8th Place – 60points; 9th Place – 55points and 10th Place – 50points.

Every position from 11th down to 60th in each category will then drop a point for each position, so 11th – 49points, 12th – 48points, 13th – 47points etc…

Is there still a team competition?

Yes! And this year, greater focus will be put on the team competition, as we want to better promote the network of affiliated clubs across Wales and the positive impact you have on your members and your communities. Every stage will also have a club related feature, so Welsh Triathlon will be in touch in the New Year (2021) to discuss potential stories. This competition though, is only valid for affiliated Welsh Triathlon clubs, so make sure you get your affiliations processed. (For further info on club affiliation, please email stephmakuvise@welshtriathlon.org).

Competition wise, it may not be the best club athletes that contribute to your club score. Be sure to clearly register your club team when entering the races, as it’s the top 5 best positioned club members within their respective age categories that will build the points tally for the club competition! You may have finished 30th in the overall category, but if you’re the third best 56year old on the day, that’s a good haul for your team. This way…everyone plays their part.

What are the prizes for 2021?

This is still to be determined. Covid-19 has meant that all funding streams have been effected and there is still uncertainty regarding future funding, but rest assured, we’re working tirelessly to attract commercial support to ensure that the prizes on offer reflect the events, the series and the racing.

Further details on this will be confirmed as soon as we have them, and certainly before the Open Water Season kicks off in 2021.
