Flat, Fast, and Furious: Welsh Athletes Battle at Eton Dorney

Published:

The penultimate round of the British Youth, Junior & Senior Super Series took place at Eton Dorney over the August bank holiday weekend. The 2012 Olympic rowing venue was perfect for some flat, fast and furious racing for youth, junior and senior athletes. Over the four races, Welsh Triathlon had thirteen athletes racing throughout the day across the eliminator format. Athletes begin with heats to qualify for A, B or C finals before racing SuperTri style over 2-3 rounds of varying formats. The aim was to stay as high up in the rounds as possible to avoid being eliminated with the winner of the final A round being crowned the overall winner.

There was a mixed bag of performances from the Welsh Academy and National Performance Centre (NTPCW) athletes, with podium finishes, solid racing and some bad luck! The standout performers of the day for the youth & junior athletes were Lucy Jones and Deri McCluskey (also NTPCW). Lucy equaled her result from Mallory earlier in the season to finish a brilliant 3rd in the Youth B category and 11th overall. Deri continued his great form of consistency to finish 2nd Junior and 4th overall.

Dom Coy was the first of the NTPCW athletes to finish coming 3rd overall. Also, in the A final, Matthew Shipley finished 14th having had trouble with his wetsuit in T1. In the B final, Robbie Gibson finished 3rd and Hugo Jinks finished 5th. Having narrowly missed out on the B final, Morgan Watts finished 5th in the C Final.

Agatha Skelton and Lili Jones were the sole representatives on the female side as they continue to gather experience in the British Super Series.

Well done to all athletes competing – the Youth B, Junior & Senior athletes are heading back to Mallory Park on 14th & 15th September for the Grand Final of the British Super Series. This also includes the Inter Regional Championships where our Tristar athletes will be competing for Wales!
