Matchett Makes it two from two in Welsh Super Series

Published:

The Mikes Bikes Pembrokeshire Coastal Triathlon was host for stage 2 of the Welsh Triathlon Super Series on Saturday 16th June, where Alex Matchett made it two from two on his home patch, and with it took the Welsh National Standard Championship.

A strong field made light of the windy conditions down Broadhaven on Saturday (16th) as over 300 individuals braved the choppy seas and unforgiving course to compete in stage 2 of the Welsh Triathlon Super Series, which doubled up as the National Standard Championship. The Super Series, which was eligible for all Home Nations Members, and the National Championships (Welsh Triathlon members only) saw each age category well contested.

It was Pembrokeshires’ Alex Matchett who took the overall Male victory, after a gung ho battle with another Pembrokeshire man, Olly Simon. Matchett, who exited the Pembrokeshire surf ahead of Simon was pulled back on the hilly bike course, only to regain the overall lead and take the victory by two and a half minutes, and with it, the Welsh National Standard Distance Championship after a challenging run, which took in parts of the Pembrokeshire National Coastal Path. Swansea Harriers’ James Dean completed the podium with a fine performance coming in third, a further 4 minutes behind second place Simon.

In the female race, Cardiff’s Katie Greenwood made her Super Series debut with a 4 minute lead from BAD Tri’s Fiona Marks in second place. Katie took the female National Standard Championship medal, but its Catherine Marks from Pembrokeshire Triathlon club who remains on top of the Super Series table, having completed both stages thus far. Milly Kipling from Cardiff Triathletes finished fourth overall but a fifth placed finish for Team Cranc’s Emma Palfrey ensures her second place standing in the super series table after two events.

Within the Super Series club competition, it was Pembrokeshire Tri who accumulated a total of 91.5 points on their home patch sees them leapfrog to the top of the tree, with strong showing by Cardiff triathletes and Celtic Tri cementing their places on the podium after stage 2.

There’s little time to recover before stage 3 of the Super Series, with the Olympic distance event at Always Aim High Cardiff Triathlon taking place this Sunday (24th June) before the series heads North to Bala.
