Monmouth sets to host 2020 Welsh Aquathlon Championships

Published:

Monmouth Triathlon Club will be the setting for the 2020 Welsh National Aquathlon Championship on Sunday 21st June and it will be the first river swim aquathlon to host a Welsh National Championship event.

This will be the 7th year of the Monmouth event, and the first time the club has hosted a National Championship stage. With two distances on offer, it is the shorter ‘Downstream Challenge’ that will host the National Championship. This will consist of a 1km river swim within the Wye, followed by a 12.5km multi-terrain run along the river and through the woodlands of the lower Wye Valley.

For those athletes who wish to challenge themselves further, there is also a long leg of the event, consisting of a 2km river swim before completing the same 12.5km run.

Welsh Triathlon events officer Gareth Evans stated “We’d received a fair bit of interest through the tender process for the aquathlon this year. There are two great open water aquathlon series taking place at Parc Bryn Bach via the NEWT club and at Aberavon via Port Talbot Harriers, but we’re looking at providing opportunities for growth to all member clubs and following an impressive tender, this seems like the right time to give the Monmouth Aquathlon that opportunity. It will be a river swim but the club has given us assurances that even in times of drought, the swim has been successfully run in each of its seven outings, so we’re putting our faith in this continuing for year eight”.

Monmouth Aquathlon race director, Richard Newhouse expressed his excitement at the announcement. “We’re delighted at the club to be given the National Aquathlon Championships for 2020. We’ve worked hard as a club to get this event over the years and it’s great to be given this opportunity and for more participants to have the awareness of our event. We hope to see many of you in June”.
