Building on the success of the Wales squad at the Commonwealth Games, Cardiff Met Sport is pleased to announce an enhanced partnership with Welsh Triathlon.

The relationship was formed in 2019 when the Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus became The National Triathlon Performance Centre of Wales (NTPCW). Its aim is to provide world-class coaching, support, and an environment to develop elite athletes to deliver international success and achieve their maximum potential.

A total of seven athletes from the Welsh Triathlon and Cardiff Met Sport NTPCW squad performed at this year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Wales secured its first triathlon medal at the Games in 20 years when the mixed team relay won silver.

Beverley Lewis, CEO of Welsh Triathlon said: "We've always had the goal of developing the NTPCW on the Cardiff Met Sport campus into a world-class training environment, enabling athletes to perform on the world stage. I believe the Commonwealth Games 2022 was a great showcase of how far we've come.

 "I would like to extend my thanks and recognise the contribution Cardiff Met Sport has made in enabling us to have this success and I hope we can use this as a platform to work together to continue to have sustainable success."

Welsh Triathlon will continue to use the Cardiff Met Sport Swimming Pool, outdoor track, the Welsh Performance Gym, and the famous National Indoor Athletics Arena (NIAC) to aid the athlete's progression. They will also support the university to deliver athlete and student recruitment, with the creation of a new university triathlon training and development squad.

 Additionally, through this partnership and Cardiff Met Sport's Open Campus programme, students and elite athletes will deliver opportunities to people within and beyond the Cardiff city region by providing research, education, and sporting opportunities.

 "We had four current Cardiff Met Sport students or alumni compete at this year's Commonwealth Games, highlighting the success the partnership has already achieved. Some of the National Triathlon Performance Centre of Wales athletes' successes at the Commonwealth Games 2022:

• Iestyn Harrett – Silver Medal in the Wales Team Relay and finished 9th in the individual race, Wales' highest-ever male finisher at the Commonwealth Games.

• Issy Morris finished 19th and Dom Coy finished 18th at their first major games.

• Rhys James guided Rhys Jones, making history as Wales's first-ever Paratriathetle and finished 4th.
