Welsh Triathlon Legacy Project ahead of Volvo 2022 World Para-Triathlon Series, Swansea, kicks off to a great start

Published:

Ahead of the Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea (WTPS) event coming to Swansea in August, Welsh Triathlon have been engaging with primary and secondary schools across the city of Swansea. The aim of the legacy project is to use GO TRI as a vehicle to raise awareness for the WTPS event as well as engage children and young people in triathlon and multi-sport activity.

So far, 236 participants across 2 comprehensive schools in Swansea: Dylan Thomas Community School and Penyrheol Comprehensive School have taken part in activity. The sessions have been completely inclusive, encouraging all to take part, no matter what ability or previous experience in triathlon.

Both sessions have been duathlons with participants taking part in a short run-bike-run circuit on school grounds.

Activity has been delivered in partnership with the Swansea Active Young People team who have provided much needed support in engaging with schools as well as on the day support at events.

“The GO TRI duathlon event delivered at our school was both enjoyable and inclusive, and provided an opportunity for young people of all abilities to gain a positive experience of the sport.  The pupils thoroughly enjoyed taking part and it was great to work with Welsh Triathlon to provide this experience”.  - N Evans - PE Teacher

“Oh my goodness I’m riding a bike, I’ve not done this before” - Penyrheol Participant

For some participants this was their first time riding a bicycle. We worked with BikeAbility Wales to ensure that we had adaptive cycles available for participants who may not have been confident riding a bicycle, and to make sure that activity is as inclusive as possible.

“That was really fun, I want to do it again”- Penyrheol Participant

“Can I go again? Is there somewhere else where I can do a duathlon again”- Dylan Thomas Participant

After each event participants are sent information on where they can continue to take part in triathlon or multi-sport activity, including local clubs, events and other GO TRI and Tri Active Cymru sessions near them.

We have 7 events left within the project and they promise to create enjoyable and fun, triathlon and multi-sport sessions for young people in Swansea
