Welsh Triathlon Performance Engagement Days

Published:

Calling all budding Triathletes and Para Triathletes. Welsh Triathlon are pleased to announce the dates of their 2019 Performance Engagement Days. The two days taking place on the 29th September in Swansea and 6th October in Deeside will provide an opportunity for young athletes aged 13-19 to get involved with the Welsh Development Academy as well as taking part in workshops delivered by Welsh Triathlon Performance Staff & Athletes.

What is the Welsh Development Academy?

The Welsh Development Academy (WDA) is for athletes aged 13-19 and is the first selective stage in the Welsh Performance focused pathway. The purpose of the Welsh Development Academy is to create a supportive, challenging and inspiring environment to help aid and guide athlete development. The WDA is built around a series of training camps and training days delivered from October to May that aim to add value to an athlete’s home daily training environment.

In addition to training opportunities WDA athletes will also be supported by the WDA in a number of ways;

  • Developing an Individual Development Plan (IDP) alongside the Welsh Development Coach & Athlete Mentors
  • Access to support and education from Welsh Triathlon practitioners
  • Support at British Youth & Junior Races
  • Opportunity to train with likeminded athletes in Wales but also other regional academies from England & Scotland
  • WDA kit

Do I need to have Triathlon experience to get involved?

Absolutely not! Whilst a number of WDA athletes will have come through the TriStars competition structure many of those joining have limited to no multisport experience. If you have experience in any of the three individual sports that make up Triathlon and would like to the opportunity to develop further then the WDA can work for you.

We also encourage athletes to continue to pursue their individual sport ambitions as we want to support late specialisation and want support athletes in a person centre way. In the 2018-19 season a number of WDA athletes represented Wales in swimming & athletics as well as Triathlon.

How do I get involved?

The first step to being selected onto the WDA is to attend one of the two Performance Engagement days. The two days will involve a series of workshops, practical master classes and a broken up aquathlon (swim & run).

The Welsh Triathlon performance team will then meet to select up to 20 athletes who will be invited to a series of training days and camps.
