Welsh Triathlon Regional Training Days

Published:

As part of Welsh Triathlons Return to Play process, the Welsh Triathlon Performance team delivered the first of our regional training days of 2020-2021.

Led by our Development Coach Vicky Johnston, and supported by our Pathway Coaches Rhys Thomas and Ray Morgan. Over the course of three separate days, 75 athletes aged 12-16 took part at three different venues, Marsh Tracks in Denbighshire, Maindy in Cardiff and Pembrey in Carmarthenshire.

As with all organised sporting activity in Wales, the days were delivered with strict protocols in place to ensure they were safe as well as fun. Despite the logistical challenges, the days were a great success and a fitting launch to the latest addition to the Welsh Triathlon Pathway series of activities.

Vicky Johnston our Development Coach had this to say,

“Everyone worked well to ensure we followed Government guidance. All three sessions were at full capacity which was great to see and really showed there is an appetite for this kind of activity. The sessions covered some key bike skills including cornering, dead-turns and some transition elements and finished with some relays to put the skills to the test.”

Regional Training Days (RTD’s) are a new addition to our suite of Pathway activities. The objective of the days is to provide a fun and engaging introduction to the Welsh Triathlon Pathway. With a focus on skill development and learning about the sport, the days are suitable for anyone who is already involved with triathlon through their local club, or who has some experience in swimming & running and would like to give multi-sport ago.

Our Head of Performance, Louis Richards shares his thoughts on the RTD’s

“It was really great to see the excitement and engagement from those who took part. It is a testament to the hard work of Vicky, Rhys & Ray that we were able to put on this kind of activity at this time. I’m really excited by the potential of the regional training days, especially in engaging more young people in our sport, and providing additional support to our fantastic junior clubs across Wales.”

We are in the process of planning the next set of RTD’s, subject to local and national restrictions. The sessions will once again be open to 11-16-year olds of any ability. All information will be sent to club contacts and keep your eyes out for more information via our social media channels if you would like to be involved!
