Welsh Triathlon Super Series update

Published:

Welsh Triathlon and its partner event organisers have had to reposition a number of the 2021 televised Welsh Triathlon Super Series events (WTSS).

Following recent communications received from Welsh Government, and additional announcements made by Westminster, we have made the following changes to the WTSS schedule.

The repositioning of these events DOES NOT indicate knowledge of the changes in restrictions by the Welsh Government on the wider return of events. There is an understanding that the Welsh Government are considering a further set of Test events before the return of general events in Wales.

The 2021 Super Series will now run from June through to October, with the hope that this new time frame will allow a six-stage series to proceed. The 2021 WTSS now looks like

Stage 1 – Saturday 12th June – Fishguard Sprint Triathlon, Fishguard (Enter Here)

Stage 2 – Saturday 10th July – Pembrokeshire Coastal Triathlon, Broadhaven (Enter Here)

Stage 3 – Sunday 8th August – Porthcawl Standard Triathlon, Porthcawl (Enter Here)

Stage 4 – Sunday 5th September – Bala Standard Triathlon, Bala (Enter Here)

Stage 5 – Saturday 18th September – Sandman Sprint Triathlon, Newborough Beach (Enter Here)

Stage 6 – Sunday 3rd October – SWYD Sprint Triathlon, Barry Island (Enter Here)

It is hoped that the new timeline will see all six events take place, and should this be the case, an individuals’ best four scores across the series will go towards individual points tallies.  In the event of restrictions not easing in sufficient time, events will be removed from the series and competitors will then have their best three scores of the remaining events count.

There will be a club competition where the best five scores registered for each affiliated club will be taken from across the individual age categories. The club points will be accumulated from all stages of the series.

The impact on revenue due to COVID-19 has resulted in the decision to change the prize fund. We will announce these changes shortly but hope to increase the emphasis on racing across the age categories and the club competition.

We understand that these changes cause disruption, but each event organiser has been as flexible as possible with regards to their own event calendars, their local authority, and community support, in re-arranging the series.

If any changes are needed, we ask that you liaise directly with the event organiser in question.  Welsh Triathlon notes that this has been an intensely difficult 12 months for our Event Organisers, so asks that you are as supportive as possible in your communications.

Welsh Triathlon Head of Development, Gareth Evans stated “With the announcement of events potentially returning in England by June we felt these changes would best support our event organisers here in Wales’ Making the decisions early will help organisers have the time to notify competitors and support the return to events here in Wales”.

The 2021 WT Super Series will again be televised, so this is your notice, that it won’t be long until the full club kit can be donned, and we see our Welsh Triathlon Community racing again.
