Why Ellie got the Buzz for volunteering

I got the buzz of seeing other people achieving their goals and doing things that they didn’t think they could.

Hi, my name is Ellie and I’m a member of Welsh Triathlon affiliated club White Rock Triathletes. We’re a small but friendly club based in Cardiff but have a wide ranging membership not only with regards to location but abilities too. I love being a member of Welsh Triathlon.

I’ve been a participant of triathlon for some 4 years now and in that time my experience and involvement has grown. Starting off with becoming a Level 2 Swimming Coach to assist the club with their swim sessions I got the buzz of seeing other people achieving their goals and doing things that they didn’t think they could. This then led me to wanting to take my role further, how could I cast that net wider? I became a Technical Official. This is such a rewarding role, you get to see participants with smiles on their faces doing the sport we all love, engaging with like-minded people (even if it is on a rule issue!) and with the fantastic support of all those behind the scenes at Welsh Triathlon, Tom and Phil I was put through my National Technical Officials course, I am very excited to attend and officiate at World Triathlon Series at Leeds and two British Championship races next year. I will be wearing the first female NTO badge proudly!

But with Coronavirus, which I’m sure everyone knows about (you’d be hard-pressed not to), this years events have been put on the back-burner. This hasn’t stopped me wanting to be as involved in triathlon as I possibly could. Knowing more people took up cycling and running during this time I wanted to do what I could to help them understand there is a whole multisport world out there for them. I signed up to become an Activator. This role allows me to lead social rides and runs to get people together and discover the joys of multisport, and similarly to officiating enables and empowers more like-minded people to get together in a sociable (distanced) surrounding.

I’ve just signed up to get my Level 1 British Triathlon Coaching badge too to build more on my knowledge and be able to give back to my club and community.
