Women’s Connect First GO TRI

Published:

Welsh Triathlon will be supporting Women’s Connect First as a partner of their Health and Active Fund Project, ‘Healthy Body- Healthy Mind’, a project aimed at encouraging BAME women and their families to take part in physical activity to create healthy lifestyles.

Funded by Welsh government the Health and Active Fund looks to provide financial support to projects that strengthen and develop community assets. Funding has been awarded to projects who promote and enable healthy activity amongst any of the following groups:

  • Children and Young People
  • People with disability or long-term illness
  • People who are economically inactive or live in areas of deprivation
  • Older people and those around the age of retirement from work

As part of the project Welsh Triathlon will be supporting Women’s Connect First in delivering triathlon and multi-sport-based activity to families in the city and south of Cardiff.

Saturday 27th July saw a pilot of activity under the partnership, which involved a group of 30 women and their children take part in a GO TRI event, at The Marl, Grangetown. The event consisted of a duathlon and participants also had the option of taking part in a kick boxing session. Through the partnership bicycles were hired through Pedal Power who provided adult and children’s bikes for participants who did not own a bicycle. The event was all contained on the field with participants running along the park, cycling around the football pitches and a final run along the park. Following completion of the duathlon participants had the option of taking part in a kickboxing session in the park. With so much excitement around the GO TRI participants requested the chance to do the duathlon again, which saw another wave go off following the kickboxing session.

With an understanding of the community and demand for activity, Welsh Triathlon will work with Women’s Connect First to provide more opportunities for communities in the city and south of Cardiff to take part in triathlon and multi-sport related activity.

Thank you to Pedal Power for providing bicycles for participants and Cardiff Council for permission to use the field and access to facilities at Channel View Leisure Centre.
