Inclusive GO TRI session at Ysgol Hen Felin

Published:

On Wednesday 28th June 2023, Welsh Triathlon supported an inclusive GO TRI session at Ysgol Hen Felin.

4 different schools took part with 36 pupils participating in total. The session encouraged inclusivity and invited different schools with additional needs to take part in multi-sport activity .

Ian, former governor, said the session is really important to help get the pupils and schools out of their comfort zone. It is about adapting the sport to suit the needs of the pupils and allowing everyone to compete at their own level. He sent a message into Rhondda Triathlon Club’s group chat asking for volunteers and received 11 responses from members who agreed.

Layla Thrib, Ysgol Hen Felin employee and organiser of the event, expressed how grateful they were for the Rhondda Triathlon Club volunteers and how the event wouldn’t have been able to run without them. They ran a similar session last year and it worked really well. Using bikes from Cwm Cycling allowed everyone to have a go and participate.

It’s amazing to see. We’ve brought 5 pupils here today but will definitely bring more next year as it’s a very inclusive event for every abilities” - Ty Coch

Greenfield school attended the event last year with 9 pupils and enjoyed, “It’s about the experience at the end of the day to try different things!”

The session was a complete success and we’re looking forward to supporting it again next year.

Welsh Triathlon’s Participation Officer, Gwyndaf Lewis, said “it's great to see an inclusive event like this combining different schools that give them different opportunities to participate in sports. Amazing to see volunteers from Rhondda Tri here as well giving their time up to help.”
