Triathlon Cymru attends Eisteddfod yr Urdd for the first time!

Published:

Triathlon Cymru made their first ever appearance at the Eisteddfod yr Urdd in Llandovery this year, attending the Sports Village alongside other National Governing Bodies to provide Triathlon sessions to event-goers. Running an hour session, a day from Monday to Thursday, over 120 participants got hands-on experience learning about triathlons, with some being experienced in the sport and others never hearing of it before.

It was a great opportunity for Triathlon Cymru to introduce the sport to a younger generation and give them a taste of what it's like to run, cycle and run all in one event. Children were keen to try out the bikes on the grass and were surprised with how fatigued their legs felt after the running component of the session. We introduced some cornering, braking, mounting and added a competitive relay which everyone enjoyed.

"The event was really successful, and it was great to see so many young people interested in triathlon and enjoying the sessions we put on. We had people from all backgrounds around Wales taking part and it was amazing to see the enthusiasm from both the experienced triathlete and complete novice. Triathlon hasn’t been at the Eisteddfod before, so it was nice to showcase what we have available in the hope that they take interest and become future stars” said Triathlon Cymru’s Participation Officer, Gwyndaf Lewis.

The Eisteddfod yr Urdd is a Welsh-language youth festival, which has been held annually since 1929. It is a celebration of the Welsh language and culture, and it attracts thousands of young people from across Wales. This year, over 100,000 people attended the event over the course of the week, making it a perfect opportunity for Triathlon Cymru to engage with the local community and promote awareness of their sport.

The experience of attending Eisteddfod yr Urdd was a positive one for Triathlon Cymru, and we look forward to attending the event again in the future. It is a great way to showcase the sport and encourage young people to get involved in triathlon. With the continued support of events like these, Triathlon Cymru can help build a bright future for their sport in Wales.
