Athlete interview.
Della Powell:
“I decided to start training and pursing triathlon as I needed something for ME. I realised quickly that I needed to be around likeminded people who would help me grow in knowledge and confidence. When I started training in August 2019 I couldn’t swim more than 25m without panicking and needing to stop for a rest! I worked on it alone and eventually reached out to Brecon Tri Club, as I knew they did swim coaching. I had such anxiety before joining my first session. I talked myself out of it I don’t know how many times...but I went. I loved everything about it! The coach, the members, the support, encouragement and of course banter. I have made strong friendships and we all sharpen each other. I totally immersed myself in all things Triathlon and Brecon Tri Club are so very encouraging!!! They have never made me feel inadequate and the welcome is so warm. They make you feel included and that means so much. Sadly, I often struggle with my mental health. Anxiety and depression can often get the better of me but since joining the club and having belief in myself I’m turning things around. I’m thankful for Triathlon and to Brecon Tri Club. I should be doing Ironman UK next month but that will have to wait until next year!! 2021 is going to be so exciting...”

Coach interview.

Richard Walters (Level 1)
“One of the reasons for taking up coaching was to help Brecon Triathlon Club develop. It is important for the future of the club that we have our own coaches and this is a start! Members quite rightly have an expectation of being coached – an expectation we have not responded well to in the past. I am in no way looking to make a living out of coaching but just want to help progress the club. Part of this progression will be to inspire other members to attend a level 1 course.
I really do want everyone in the sessions to have an enjoyable time. I want them to feel included and be treated equally regardless of ability. To me it is important that participants maintain their interest in triathlon. So many novices find triathlon daunting and time consuming – this can lead to withering enthusiasm.  To maintain interest our sessions need to be fun and inclusive but also be adaptable to the different motivations and stresses of individual participants. This means getting to know the individuals, taking an interest – why are they here, what are they after?  Taking an interest can be such a massive motivator and booster for people in many life situations making coaching even more worthwhile”.
