Bala Team Relays and IRC Qualifier 2018

Published:

Save the date for Welsh Triathlon’s Bala Team Relays and Junior IRC Qualifier 2018, due to be held at Llyn Tegid, Bala on Saturday 7th July 2018.

As part of Welsh Triathlon’s Multisport Weekend, which also includes stage 4 of the new Welsh Super Series and Swim Wales’ National Open Water Championships on Sunday 8th July.

The Bala Team Relays will provide a platform for established clubs to go head to head and compete for the Welsh National Club Relay Championship, as well as allowing newcomers to the sport the opportunity to get together and have a taste of what triathlon has to offer.

What is a Team Relay?

Unlike a traditional relay, where each competitor completes their individual elements before his or her team mate continues, each discipline needs to be completed by all participants before moving on to the next, resulting in a faster, more exciting event.

Each member of the team individually swims 300 metres before passing their timing chip to their team mate, and so on, until all four team members have completed the swim. Moving onto the bike leg, each athlete individually completes the 9km course, until the last team member passes over the timing chip to the first team member to start the 2km run section.

Teams consisting of four individuals Home Nations members from the same club will compete for the Welsh National Club Relay Championships, while other teams will compete within the open relay category.

National Championship Awards will be awarded to Male and Female teams across Junior, Senior, Vet 40 and Vet 50 age categories, whilst Mixed Awards will be awarded to Junior, Senior and Vet 40 categories.

IRC Qualifiers

Save the date for the Junior IRC Qualifier 2018. In a change to previous years, the IRC qualifier and Gemau Cymru heads North to Llyn Tegid. This will be the 8th stage of Welsh Triathlon’s 2018 Tristar Series, and those participants wishing to be eligible need to compete in 3 stages prior to the qualifier taking place.

The IRC will be the only Open Water stage in this years’ series as it tries to replicate the conditions athletes will face at Mallory Park during the British Triathlon Under 20s Festival.

Further information on the other Tristar Series stages can be found on the Welsh triathlon website.

*Welsh Triathlon are awaiting confirmation from partner agencies with regards to Road Closures before entries for both events can be opened. It is envisaged that these will be open by the end of January / Beginning of February.
