Over 100 participants took part in the SeaQuest GOTRI Aquathlon

Sunday 3rd June saw Porthcawl harbour play host to over 100 participants who took part in the Seaquest GOTRI Aquathlon. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all, with positive feedback around the event organisation as well as proving participants confidence in open water swimming.

For many this was their first open water event, the aquathlon provided the perfect opportunity for beginners and novices to try out and get a taste for open water swimming:

“It was my first ever aquathon and I’m hooked! Would love to see this become a regular fixture in Porthcawl” mentioned one participant.

SeaQuest Coastal Science and Discovery delivers marine education to schools and the local Community, through educational programs and events. This year, Visit Wales are celebrating ‘The Year Of the Sea’, with this SeaQuest decided that this would be a great opportunity to organise an open water multi-sport event as part of their other events which will celebrate both the ‘The Year of The Sea’  and World ocean Day 2018.

Through the GO TRI event, SeaQuest aimed to not only celebrate the year of the sea and world ocean day, but to:

  • Encourage health and well -being of local/wider community by introducing multi-sport activity
  • Inspire a love of the sea through using it for health and well-being recreation
  • Inspire an interest in caring for the sea, awareness of plastic pollution (reduce, re-use, recycle) and only human waste to be put down the toilet.

Claire Godfrey, event organiser mentioned that

“the event was a great success, we had a great turnout and have had some really good feedback, both after the event and via email”

SeaQuest also host a range of other events including free sea swims to celebrate World Ocean Day. For more information, visit http://www.harbourquarterporthcawl.co.uk/seaquest/ or search Harbourside Quarter Porthcawl on Facebook or @HQPorthcawl on Twitter to find out more.

From Welsh Triathlon, a thank you to SeaQuest for putting on this fantastic opportunity for participants to take part in an open water GO TRI event. In addition to this thank you to SeaQuest’s partners; Porthcawl Runners, Pencoed Triathlon Club, Porthcawl Lifeguards, Childs Play Surfer, SLSA Wales Power Craft, Porthcawl Park Run, Awen Trust as well as local community groups for supporting the event.
