Stage 3 at the sensational SWYD Sprint Triathlon

Published:

SWYD Sprint Triathlon was the third race in the super series, and athletes gathered on a beautiful day in Barry to showcase their skills in the three disciplines - the Triathlon, which doubled up as an Age Group qualification for the European Sprint Championship.

Organised by All or Nothing Events, the event was seamless from start to finish. The sun was shining as crowds gathered to watch the spectacle which saw the athletes take to the swim at Whitmore Bay before heading on 20km of closed roads around the South Wales town. Athletes then finished in the old harbour.

The race started with a bang as the first athletes emerged from the water after the swim leg. Jack Southam was the first to exit the water in a time of 10:55 followed closely by Liam Lloyd and 16-year-old Ifan Bowen. These athletes set the tone for an exciting race ahead as they prepared to tackle the closed bike route and run legs.

Liam Lloyd lead the bike for the three loops of 4.5miles followed by Dafyd Jay on his tail. The run leg was an epic battle as Liam and Dafyd fought to claim the top spot. However, Liam's experience gave him the edge as he surged ahead to cross the finish line of the 5k run in a time of 16:06 and claim his third win of the series in an overall time of 58:33. Dafyd came in second in 1:01:03 and Ifan Bowen finished in 1:01:51 in 3rd.

In the women's category, it was Hana Blake who led the swim in a time of 11:55 followed by Rachel Sayer-Smith while Lena Poulton showed her form as she powered through on the bike leg to record the fastest time. Hana also recorded the fastest run time of 19.16 and claim the win of stage 3 of the Welsh Triathlon Super Series in an overall time of 1:12:24, Lena Poulton close behind in 1:12:40 and Bethan Jones in 3rd with a time of 1:13:22.

As the athletes prepare for the next stage of the series in Broadhaven, it is evident that Liam Lloyd and Beth Jones remain in the lead after three races.

For those who missed out on the action, the results will be available online by the end of the week, and the event will be televised on S4C on the 14th of July 2023 at 8:00pm.

We can't wait to see what incredible performances await us at the next race in the series on the 8th of July at The Bluestone Pembrokeshire Triathlon.
